Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of atonement, will begin at sundown tonight.

The Jewish holiday typically falls on the 10th day of the seventh month in the Jewish calendar. The day is marked with fasting, prayers and confessions of sins. While some schools and offices across the country close in observance, Torrance Unified Schools were open.

Temple Emet, the Jewish temple in Torrance will hold a service tonight at 7:30 p.m. featuring a special cellist, as well as a break-the-fast tomorrow morning at 10:30. The Jewish Community Center of the Beach Cities in Redondo Beach, which also serves Torrance, welcomes the community to join. The group will hold several services tomorrow, as well as a break-the-fast buffet celebrating the end of the holiday tomorrow evening.
