The possibility of having an NFL stadium close to home here in Torrance moved a step closer to reality today.

The six-member NFL relocation committee recommended today that team owners approve the joint bid between the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers to build a $1.7 billion dollar stadium in Carson. But NFL team owners had other ideas, approving a plan for the St. Louis Rams to move forward with a 2.66 billion dollar stadium project in Inglewood, near LAX.

The Chargers were given the option to join that project. The Raiders will remain in Oakland.

The deal was approved by the league’s owners Tuesday night after more than 11 hours of meetings.

Economic Development Manager Fran Fulton said having an NFL team nearby will have a positive impact on the City of Torrance. She also added that the City is in its preliminary stages of looking into a sports commission that would be specific to Torrance in order to attract more sporting events and supporters to the area.
