Torrance’s ExxonMobil refinery is getting closer to resuming full operations.

ExxonMobil said today they have been working closely with the South Coast Air Quality Management District on a potential plan to restart the fluid catalytic cracking unit. The refinery is looking for approval so it can resume normal operations.

Last year, there was an explosion at the ExxonMobil refinery in Torrance during maintenance on a piece of FCC pollution control equipment called an electrostatic precipitator.

ExxonMobil plans to sell the refinery to PBF Energy once the facility is fully operational. An ExxonMobil spokeswoman says the company’s focus is on resuming the work safely.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District will hold a March 19 hearing in Torrance on the proposed restart process.
