A nearly $1 million sidewalk project is breaking ground this week.

Public Works crews were busy west of Yukon Avenue at 177th Street today looking to remove tree root problems before moving to the next stage of the project. This sidewalk repair work for handicap access is a reoccurring project thanks to federal funds. The department received money through the Community Development Block Grant fund.

Work will focus on this three block areas over the next five months. Some of the next phases will include lifting the sidewalk and replacing it. New handicapped access ramps also will be installed, along with new gutters.

Interesting fact, the City of Torrance has 550 miles of sidewalks, and nearly 47,000 trees.
