It was an eventful morning for the Torrance Police Department as they responded to a call about a man armed with a chainsaw trying to run people over at a Southern California Edison storage yard in North Torrance.
The incident happened at about 6:30 this morning at an SCE storage yard located on Yukon Avenue. Initial reports say police responded to a call by a security guard on site who said a man armed with a chainsaw was trying to run people over with a truck at the property.
One victim suffered minor injuries, but it was unclear how the person was injured. According to Torrance Police Sergeant Paul Kranke, no officers were hurt in the altercation.
Officers who were called to the scene ended up firing at the suspect.
While the property belongs to Edison, it was being used by Birchfield Enterprises, a tree trimming company that cuts back trees from power lines. The man holding the chainsaw was not an employee of the company; he was said to be an independent contractor who often came by looking for work.
According to Torrance Police Sergeant Paul Kranke, gunshots were fired, but the suspect was not struck. The suspect was handcuffed and taken into custody. No officers were injured in the incident.
