The Torrance Public Library received some great news this morning.

The Library, which is part of the Community Services Department, received an Excellence Award in the under $5 million dollar budget “Wild Card” category from the California Library Association for the Torrance Public Library van.

The Library entered its project entry called “Library Delivery Van Wrap,” a moving promotion of what Torrance’s libraries have to offer. The van has its own Twitter page where people can comment and the Library tweets people alerting them about events happening in the community.

The Library on wheels spends nearly five hours a day on the road in Torrance, traveling 20 miles. It’s an opportunity for library representatives to have face time with members of the community.

Dana Vinke, principal librarian of operations, was the project manager and says they turned a regular delivery van into something special.

The CLA Excellence Awards honor California libraries that put in quality efforts in promoting their message. The entry categories included print, electronic, event/campaign and wildcard. The CLA will hold an official award ceremony in Sacramento in November.
