Torrance Police officers are taking part in a national campaign this week.

Officers will be on the road throughout the day and night paying extra attention to drivers or passengers breaking the law by not buckling up. The Click It or Ticket educational campaign began years ago to target teens and young adults who don’t wear their seat belts.

According to research done by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, while nearly 88 percent of passenger vehicle occupants buckled up in 2015, almost 50 percent of people who died in vehicle crashes nationwide were not buckled.

This campaign comes just before the Memorial Day holiday, to remind travelers during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year to buckle up. This year’s Click It or Ticket effort has increased campaign participation more than ever, with all 50 states taking part in it. The campaign continues until Sunday, June 5.
