Hundreds were evacuated from the Torrance YMCA today.
Around 9:30 this morning, the Torrance Fire Department reported to a hazardous materials emergency at the YMCA facility on Sepulveda Boulevard. Twenty-one Torrance firefighters responded to what authorities say was a mechanical problem with the YMCA’s pool equipment.
Nearly 300 people in the facility were evacuated. As a precautionary measure, Torrance Police also asked residents on 226th Street to stay inside their homes until the scene was clear.
Torrance Fire Department’s HazMat team investigated the situation. The scene was cleared around 1:30 this afternoon. Los Angeles County Health Department’s HazMat team was on the scene to assist.
