Torrance Police officers will be out in full force at various checkpoints coming up this weekend.
Driving under the influence and drivers’ license checks are planned between 8 p.m. Friday, June 10 and 3 a.m. Saturday, June 11. It has been shown that checkpoints reduce the number of fatalities and injuries in alcohol- or drug-related crashes.
Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol or drug impairment, as well as checking for proper licensing.
Research shows that crashes involving impaired drivers can be reduced by up to 20 percent when DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely and are publicized. Nationally, the latest data shows over 10,000 were killed by an impaired driver.
Funding for this checkpoint is provided to the Torrance Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
