After three fatal incidents, a popular furniture store is in the process of a voluntary recall.
IKEA is recalling 29 million chests of drawers after reports of dresser tip-over accidents. The recall includes Malm dressers and chests of drawers with three or more drawers and other models.
The dressers can be pulled over by a child if they aren’t securely attached to a wall. Also when multiple drawers are opened it can tip over.
In 2014, two children died in tip-over accidents involving these dressers, and the most recent one was this past February. An IKEA spokesperson says the products are not designed to be freestanding, but should be attached to the wall.
Consumers can ask for a free wall-anchoring kits. IKEA also is planning to offer full refunds for dressers purchased after 2002, and partial store credit for older furniture.
