Hundreds of professional lifeguards are preparing to go head-to-head in competition.

They are prepping for the 2016 United States Lifesaving Association National lifeguard championships in nearby Hermosa Beach.

Kicking off tomorrow with the junior lifeguard and U19 championships, the annual four-day event will return for the first time since 2013. Among the competitors, are a father-daughter duo, Mel and Jenna Solberg from Torrance. Mel won his age division in the American Ironman competition at the 2015 USLA National Championships. USLA’s mission is to reduce aquatic injuries and deaths.
