There have been numerous reports of a suspicious caller pretending to be a City employee.

Officials say you may want to think twice before giving out any information to a caller claiming to be a Torrance Public Works Department employee. Police say someone is calling locals and giving out false information. The calls have shown a 714 area code. Most recently, the suspect informed a local of a two-day street closure and then became aggressive when the resident asked for employment verification. Authorities say the City of Torrance Public Works Department does not call residents about road closures. They post signs or deliver door flyers.

Here are some safety tips regarding phone calls and scams released by the police department:

  • Don’t give out any personal information over the phone.
  • Don’t allow anyone onto your property that you’re not expecting.
  • Always ask for identification.
  • Call 9-1-1 if there is someone suspicious at your door.
