The Torrance Police Department remembers one of their own today.
On Aug. 23, 1959, Sgt. William “Bob” Robert Lewis was killed in the line of duty. He was attempting to make a traffic stop when he was struck by a vehicle in the intersection of Hawthorne Boulevard and Carson Street.
Lewis was a Torrance native and joined the Torrance Police Department in October 1949. Lewis is remembered for reintroducing the Motor Program after 14 years, and as someone who always loved being a motor officer.
Every year, the Torrance Police Department remembers fallen officers by hosting a memorial ceremony in their honor. To date, the Torrance Police Department has lost four officers in the line of duty and every year they also remember crossing guard Hazel Kenney.
