The City of Torrance is disappointed in the cancellation of the LA Triathlon. In preparation for the event, the City has worked with Pacific Sports since early this year to establish routes, safety elements and street closures in order to have a successful third triathlon, which was planned for Sunday, Sept. 11. All factors were in place. In the past few weeks, however, Pacific Sports failed to follow through on its agreed requirements.

The City set deadlines and established expense estimates for Pacific Sports to fulfill its financial obligations. Estimated expenses have always been payable in advance of an event; any adjustments and reimbursements are made once actual billings are finalized. Unfortunately, Pacific Sports did not comply. When the City’s requirements and deadlines were not met, the City provided Pacific Sports one final opportunity to fulfill its obligations, but Pacific Sports refused to meet its financial requirements.
Reluctantly, absent advance payment of the estimated expenses, the City could not provide the personnel and equipment to allow for the City’s closing of streets and fulfillment of special events requirements. This resulted in Pacific Sports having to cancel the event.
We apologize for the inconvenience to residents along the route and to the applicants who hoped to compete. The safety of our residents and visitors is our priority.
