There’s a new phone scam targeting Torrance residents, victimizing some out of thousands of dollars.

Torrance Police are reporting that suspects pretending to be government agency personnel are threatening citizens into transferring money to prepaid iTunes gift cards. The suspect will tell the victim that they owe money to the government and that they must make immediate payment.

Authorities say if you get such a call, you should hang up and don’t give make any payments even when the callers use a scare tactic.

Remember that the IRS never asks for credit card or prepaid card information over the phone, never insists on taxpayers using a specific payment method to pay tax obligations, and never requests immediate payment.

If you have any questions or concern, you can call the Police Department at (310) 618-6392.
