With Thanksgiving just a couple of days away, Torrance Fire Department is reminding people to stay safe in the kitchen.

Cooking fires are the No. 1 cause of home fires and home injuries. While it’s an exciting time to cook with family and friends, there are many steps you can take to cook with caution. Here are some tips:

  • Stay alert. Don’t use the stove if you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol.
  • Stay in the kitchen while cooking; use a timer as a reminder that you’re cooking.
  • Keep anything that can catch fire, like oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging away from your stove top.
  • If you ever have a small cooking fire, smother the flames by sliding a lid over the pan and turning off the burner. For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.
