A local organization continues to support literacy and the love of books thanks to a big donation.

The Friends of the Torrance Library donated just over $40,000. More than $25,000 of it will go toward the summer reading program which runs for seven weeks. The program encourages students to keep reading over the summer so they don’t lose the skills they’ve learned during the school year. The hope is that kids will read eight hours over the summer, which is just 20 minutes per day. The money goes toward buying incentives to keep kids motivated, including a free paperback book for each participant.

The remaining amount will go toward youth services activities at the library. In case you didn’t know, Torrance libraries offer movies, events including magic, music and puppet shows, arts and crafts and many other fun activities.

Anyone can join The Friends of the Torrance Library. Membership is just $5. The group puts on four book sales a year to raise money. They give more than $100,000 each year to the Torrance libraries.
