A traffic accident early this morning caused some delays on a major road in Torrance.
Two southbound lanes of Hawthorne Boulevard between Halison Street and Del Amo Boulevard were shut down for more than an hour due to a car versus pedestrian accident. The pedestrian was hospitalized, and authorities say the injuries are consistent with a traffic collision. The pedestrian is recovering at an area hospital. No other details are available at this time, and Torrance Police are investigating.
Police have reported three accidents over the past week involving pedestrians.
It’s a good reminder for drivers and pedestrians to share the responsibility of keeping themselves and others on the road safe. AAA officials say pedestrians need to make sure they are visible to drivers at all times and make eye contact with them. Stay in well-lighted areas and wear lightly colored or reflective clothing at night and brightly colored clothing during the day time.
Your eyes and ears are the best tools to keep you out of harm’s way, so avoid any distractions. Follow traffic rules and signals. Never assume a driver will give you the right of way, and make every effort to make eye contact with driver before entering the roadway. Lastly, walk in safe places, use crosswalks and stay on sidewalks as much as possible.
It’s also critical for drivers to do be aware of their surroundings. Be alert and look out for pedestrians. Next, follow speed limits and be mindful when pulling into or out of driveways. Always yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk. When you stop, allow enough room between your car and the crosswalk, so other drivers can see why you’re stopped. Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
