It was a messy situation this morning as asphalt literally crumbled, causing traffic to shut down in part of the city.

At 4:45 this morning, the Torrance Fire Department reported a water main break that caused a large sink hole to form in the middle of the road on 205th Street at Manhattan Place between Gramercy and Western Avenue.

Occupants of buildings around the area were left without water. Officials say the Public Works Water Department has been working to clean up the mud and asphalt and make repairs.

Traffic will continue to be shut down in both directions on 205th Street and Manhattan Place until the sink hole is repaired later this week. Water was restored earlier this afternoon.

Officials ask people to avoid the area if possible and to take alternate routes.
