Tax Day is here, and millions of returns have been mailed.
But for those who need a little more time, no need to worry. The Internal Revenue Service offers an automatic six-month extension, so you can have more time to gather, prepare and return tax paperwork. But the deadline for sending any money owed to the IRS is the same.
The fastest and easiest way to get an extension is through IRS.Gov, where you can file an extension for free. Taxpayers may get an extension by paying all or part of their estimated income tax due and indicate that the payment is for an extension. If you don’t pay, the IRS can charge you additional fees, penalties and interest on the unpaid amount.
IRS officials expect more than 70 percent of taxpayers to get tax refunds this year.
