Some local high schools are getting recognized as being some of the best in California.

U.S. News and World Report released its annual list of best high schools in the country today, ranking schools on a national and state level.

In Torrance, South High School ranked 182nd in California. West High took the 283rd spot and North High ranked 284th. The rankings identify the top performing public schools and offer specific data on more than 20,000 high schools.

For the first time, the report also included the best STEM, magnet and charter schools in the country.

To be considered among the best, high schools had to pass a rigorous four-step process that determined whether a school was serving all of its students including factors like performance compared to state statistics, graduation rates and college readiness performance. A total of more than 6,000 high schools were also ranked on a national level. The gold medal went to 500 schools, and more than 2,100 schools received a silver medal. North, South and West received Silver Medals.
