Early this morning, Torrance Fire crews responded to a flaring event at the Torrance Refinery.
Around 6 a.m., Torrance Fire officials responded to the Torrance Refining Company due to a report of a unplanned, visible flaring event. The flaring lasted a couple of hours and officials say it was because of a unit upset. There was no offsite impact and there were no evacuations.
A flare is a tall stack equipped with burners used as a safety device. They are used for the combustion and disposal of combustible gases due to emergency relief, over pressure, process upsets, startups, shutdowns and other operational safety reasons.
