California has awarded eight grants countywide to help eliminate food waste, because according to the hunger-relief charity, Feeding America, nearly 1.3 million Angelinos go hungry.

The California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery’s new Food Waste Prevention and Rescue Grant Program is awarding eight organizations a total of $2.1 million dollars. The program is a part of California strategy to combat climate change. The organizations will use the funds to help find strategies to eliminate nearly six million tons of food waste which end up in landfills in California each year.

One of the organizations being awarded, Food Forward, has donated to facilities in Torrance including the Barlett Senior Citizen Center.
