A local Assemblyman is taking steps to make sure cities are being safer when it comes to on-the-go transportation.

Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi has introduced Assembly Bill 1286 that would require cities and counties to adopt safety rules before e-scooter and other shared mobility service providers offer any device for rent or use. Also, it would make sure service providers will offer minimum insurance to protect riders as well as pedestrians and others in case an injury occurs.

The Journal of the American Medical Association just published a study last month, which reported that 249 scooter riders were treated for injuries. Currently, in the City of Torrance, there is a moratorium in place banning shared on-demand personal mobility devices until the City Council takes action or the moratorium expires.
