You have the opportunity to participate in a historic change that may happen in the City of Torrance.
Tonight, the second public hearing meeting on the transition from at-large to district-based elections will take place from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Council Chambers. The purpose of the hearing is to identify the neighborhoods, other communities of interest and other local factors that should be considered or used as building blocks when drafting district maps.
The goal of redistricting is to create districts from smaller areas such as precincts or counties in such a way that all of the districts have the same population or are within a very small deviation. The public is free to submit maps through an online tool that is available on TorranceCA.gov/CouncilDistricts. There, you will be able to find a Quick Start Guide to show you how to create districts.

The information regarding time frame for the meeting regarding districts is a little off. The Item was 10A and did not begin until after 9:00PM . I finally got home at 10:30PM. I know all Council is working double time most likely. This is not anything that we really want to do but rather ‘forced’ to take the ball and run through the process. Earlier time frame might encourage others rather than something at the near end of the meeting so late. THANKs. Janet Payne

I’d like to see where we violate anything. I believe in choosing our battles, and this one I think we need to fight. It will split Torrance and make us weaker. The voters will only be able to vote for one person every 4 years versus for 3 people every 2 years. Kind of going backwards, especially because I don’t believe we have the problem of having any specific minority stuck in one area without proper representation.
